What Is an Aura?
An aura is described in many spiritual and metaphysical traditions as a luminous field of energy that surrounds living beings — and sometimes objects. According to these traditions, the aura reflects a person's physical vitality, emotional state, mental activity, and spiritual development, and is perceptible to those with clairvoyant or highly developed sensory abilities.
The concept of an energetic field surrounding the human body appears in traditions across the world: the Hindu concept of prana, the Chinese concept of qi, the Christian depiction of saints surrounded by halos, and the light described by mystics in nearly every culture. Whether approached as literal energetic phenomena or as metaphorical representations of inner states, auras are a deeply cross-cultural idea.
Auras and Clairvoyance
Seeing auras is considered one of the most accessible expressions of clairvoyant ability. Unlike seeing distant events or future outcomes, aura perception is immediate and directly tied to a person standing in front of you. Many people report that their first clairvoyant experience was noticing a faint glow or colour around another person — often during moments of relaxed, unfocused vision.
Practices for developing aura vision typically involve:
- Softening the physical gaze (using peripheral rather than direct focus)
- Observing a person against a plain, neutral background
- Practising with the self first, using a mirror against a white wall in soft lighting
- Meditating beforehand to quiet analytical thinking
The Layers of the Aura
Many esoteric systems describe the aura as consisting of multiple distinct layers, each corresponding to a different dimension of being:
- The Etheric Body: The layer closest to the physical body; often described as a pale blue or greyish light extending a few centimetres from the skin. Associated with physical health and vitality.
- The Emotional Body: Extends further and is considered more fluid and changeable, reflecting current emotional states. This layer is said to shift colour with mood.
- The Mental Body: Associated with thought processes and beliefs. Often described as yellow in those who are intellectually active.
- The Astral Body: Said to connect the personal to the spiritual realms; often associated with the heart and with the quality of one's relationships.
- Higher Bodies: Several systems describe additional layers (etheric template, celestial body, ketheric template) corresponding to progressively higher spiritual dimensions.
Aura Colours and Their Meanings
Within metaphysical traditions, specific aura colours are associated with particular qualities. The following interpretations are drawn from widely used contemporary and historical sources — they are not universally agreed upon, and different traditions emphasise different associations:
| Colour | Associated Qualities |
|---|---|
| Red | Physical energy, passion, vitality, strong will; can also indicate anger or stress |
| Orange | Creativity, confidence, emotional warmth, social engagement |
| Yellow | Intellect, clarity, optimism, analytical thinking |
| Green | Healing ability, compassion, growth, balance, affinity with nature |
| Blue | Communication, calm, spiritual sensitivity, truthfulness |
| Indigo / Violet | Psychic ability, spiritual development, deep intuition, visionary capacity |
| White / Gold | High spiritual attainment, purity, protective energy, divine connection |
| Grey / Brown | Fatigue, confusion, energetic blockages, or simply a state of transition |
It is worth noting that colours rarely appear alone — most aura readers describe complex blends, and the location, intensity, and movement of colour are considered equally important as the colour itself.
A Word on Scientific Context
From a scientific standpoint, the human body does emit measurable forms of radiation — including infrared heat and biophotons (ultra-weak light emissions from biological processes). Some researchers have explored whether these relate to what sensitives perceive as auras. The aura as described in metaphysical traditions, however, goes well beyond what current measurement technologies detect. As with clairvoyance more broadly, aura perception sits at the intersection of spiritual experience, perception science, and open inquiry.
